Here you will have the chance to discover “Ghost City” a name given by locals for the combination of their surnames in Chinese (Yin and Wang), which means “King of Hell”, and is also the reason for the presence of arresting sculptures in the temples on Mingshan Mountain.

Day 3: Cruise on the Yangtze (B,L,D)
Today, you will get to see the famous Three Gorges! At around 9am, the boat should arrive at the Qutang Gorge, surrounded by breathtakingly high peaks over 1200 metres (3900 feet) high. The entrance to the gorge, nicknamed Kuimen,, used to be considered as one of the most intimidating passes in the world.
At around 10:30am, you will pass through the second gorge, the Wu Gorge, the deepest of the three.
After lunch, we will make our way up the Shennong River, one of the Yangtze’s tributaries (1pm to 5pm). On this stretch, you will be able to enjoy the placid, luscious shorelines of the river. You may also get glimpse Tujia people, still populous in the region today. The Tujia are very fond of chanting and dance, and particularly worthy of note are the “Hand waving dance” and a dance called “Maogusi”.
As you continue down the Shengong, you enter into the west part of the Xiling Gorge, the final and longest gorge (around 80km/50 miles). During the journey, you will be able to admire the Huangting Temple, built during the period of the Three Kingdoms – a key period in Chinese history.

Day 4: Arrival in Yichang (B)
Today, you will be served breakfast at 6:30am. After breakfast, you will disembark for the Three Gorges Dam. This enormous dam splits the Xiling Gorge in two, and as the “world’s biggest barrage” it currently generates a massive quantity of hydroelectricity (more than 2 million watts, accounting for around 10% of China’s total capacity according to official figures). This man-made wonder is a must see when traveling to the Three Gorges region.
Following this, you will set off for the Xiling Gorge, the last portion of your journey at 10:30am, arriving in Yichang at 11:30.
Chongqing is the start of the trip and worth a quick look to see what is claimed to be the world's largest city, population 33 million and counting!
Fengdu Ghost City, reputedly where the devil lives and a common shore excursion on a river cruise.
Shennong Stream takes you off the main river and up a quiet tributary flanked by lushly vegetated cliffs where you may spot traditional suspended coffins.
The Three Gorges Dam project is the world's largest and perhaps most controversial but at the same time a breathtaking sight. Cruising through the 5 giant locks has added a modern twist to this timeless cruise.
Best time to visit:
April and May and September and October offer the best weather but cruises run for most of the year except for December, January and February.
The shore excursions are what make the trip with good contrast between ancient temples, relaxing river trips up tributaries and the awesome might of the Three Gorges Dam project.
One of the classic river journeys which offers something for everyone as well as good insight into life in this part of China. A deservedly popular addition to a trip through China
